While the world often only sees the front-line battles — the smoke, the gunfire, the night raids — there is another battle that is quieter, longer, and sometimes even harder: the battle to heal.

Today we honor Israel’s wounded warriors and returning reservists, the heroes who survived the battlefield but now face months — even years — of physical and emotional recovery.

Their courage does not end when the fighting stops.
For many, the journey home is only the beginning.

A Soldier’s Story: “The Real Pain Starts Here”

Earlier this year, we visited a wounded reservist who had been severely injured in the fighting in northern Gaza. After multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation, he shared something that struck us deeply:

“Out there, you don’t think about pain. You just think about surviving.
But here… here is where the real pain begins.”

His wife sits beside him every day at the hospital, balancing children at home with the fear and uncertainty of what comes next.

His parents take turns staying overnight so he is never alone.

His unit mates visit between deployments, reminding him he is still part of something greater.

This is the unseen army — the families, the caregivers, the brothers-in-arms — who hold up Israel’s wounded heroes when they cannot stand on their own.
